MissTraders International in partnership with Gudie Collection, the 2020 MIsstrader of the year aims to open its first fully automated shoe factory in Nigeria, part of an effort to bring manufacturing back closer to its consumers in more affluent countries.

The project fits with a broader drive by MissTraders International to export to other parts of the world. There’s really a very high commercial reason for why you would make footwear in Nigeria. For a shoe-factory job paying in the USA is $12 an hour, the actual cost of shoe-making — when adding benefits — grows to $16 an hour, compared with about $1 an hour in Nigeria

The World’s Next Great Manufacturing Center

Africa is in the early stages of a population boom that will reach 2 billion people by 2050, creating the largest pool of labor in the world. Yet African nations have some of the highest unemployment rates in the world. The official unemployment rate in Nigeria is 12.1%, but the government recognizes an additional 19.1% of the working-age population as “underemployed.” For young people, the situation is much worse: Youth unemployment is at 42.2%. Thus Africa is a natural destination for manufacturing jobs.

Some of the reasons you should consider this as an investment opportunity are:

  • Nigeria is an attractive region for investment.
  • Nigeria is experiencing high GDP growth.
  • An improving investment environment is increasing capital flow.
  • Nigeria’s exports are growing exponentially, with broader industry diversification.
  • Demographic shifts, urbanization, and increased purchasing power are driving change in Nigeria.
  • Infrastructure in Nigeria lags, but with additional public and private investment, positive trends are emerging.
  • Internet and mobile phone use are rising at a dizzying pace
  • Although low labor productivity remains a challenge, current wage differentials are attractive
  • Inflation rates have been stable or declining in Nigeria in the last five years.
